A 50-year-old tourist from Moscow was carrying unusual cargo upon his
arrival to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport. The man’s luggage contained
hundreds of smoked fish wrapped in newspaper, tens of kilograms worth of
lamb chops and dozens of jars of jam.
The tourist, who carried four pieces of
luggage, raised customs’ agents’ suspicions due to the heavy load he was
carrying. They later discovered the unusual cargo after passing the
luggage through the airport’s x-ray machine.
Upon being questioned, the man claimed that the food was brought as a gift to his family. According to customs’ agents the man was attempting to smuggle the food with the intention of selling it to local butchers specializing in Eastern European cuisine.
“The goods were brought without approval and under improper conditions,” said the customs representative, “and therefore were likely to prove a risk to public safety.” The food was slated for destruction.
